Lazio - Cultural

Lazio is a hilly region in central Italy. It features volcanic lakes and hills, ancient ruins, the Vatican City, magnificent castles, rural towns, old tombs and so much more. Each corner of Lazio is marked by history. Each has its own monuments and spectacular sights. Thousands of years of civilisation make this region an incredible mantle of history.

Lazio has as many as twenty five nature parks and reserves. Much of Lazio's landscape was formed by the eruption of four volcanoes. These eruptions showered the area with lava. Lakes were formed in the craters. The soil, made fertile by the lava, became ideal for growing vines, olives, fruit, and nut trees. The volcanic activity also left Lazio with several hot springs. These healing springs are found in Tivoli, Viterbo and the world class spa town of Fiuggi.

Rome (or Roma),the capital of Italy, is called the Eternal City . It attracts visitors from all over the world. The city features Roman ruins, Renaissance squares, museums, piazzas, fountains, and many baroque era churches. At one time, Roma was the capital of the largest empires in the world. The city boasts of more than 900 churches. However, if you were to only visit one, see the Vatican. St. Pete's Cathedral is one of the largest and most ornately decorated churches in the world. In and around the church, you will find works of art from Michelangelo, Bernini, and Raphael. In the Vatican Museums next to St. Pete's visitors can view one of the finest art collections in the world! Rome contains some of the finest paintings, sculpture, and architecture on earth. The city brings thousands of archeologists, scholars, and artists to its piazzas and ruins each year. As the spiritual and political centre of the Catholic Church, Rome is home to more than twenty international relief and peace organisations. It also is a popular destination for Christian pilgrims.

Rome is home to a host of governmental and educational institutions. Rome will keep you busy and well entertained at all times. For those interested in art, music, history, and religion, there are few cities in the world that will offer you more. As you wander through, you are walking in the very footsteps of the Caesars, St. Peter, the Popes, and Michelangelo! Whatever your interests may be, there is something here for everyone.

North of Rome is the former homeland of the Etruscans, whose spiritual depth is revealed in their fine necropolis. The Vulci ruins are full of Etruscan bronzes. Nearby Tarquinia hosts an archeological museum which is second to none. The entire life span of the Etruscan people is best represented in their frescoes at the necropolis. You can also explore their stone tumuli, located in the nearby forests and the regions deserted valleys. Also close to Rome, you may want to visit the Alban Hills, known as the “Castelli Romani”. The Lakes of Bolsena, Vico, Bracciano, and Albano are also worth a visit.
